Why I Run

Running enhances my endurance, speed, strength, and flexibility for fencing.

I love competition. Ever since my first race, I felt the desire to push myself harder and improve my times. Distance running pushes me to the limit and makes me stronger both physically and mentally. I enjoy racing because of the rush of excitement that comes with it and the rewarding feeling at the end of the race of knowing I ran as hard as I could.

I run with the high school team because I love spending time with my teammates and growing with them. Also, the older runners and coaches for my team, Alex Clark and Deborah Ribbens, push me to set and achieve high goals. They have helped shape me into the hardworking and determined person I am now.

Leading the Team

This year, as a senior, I am a team captain and a role model for the younger members. Since freshman year, I have stood out to my coaches and teammates for my contributions to the team. I have been my team's lead runner all my years in high school. In fall of 2019, I led my cross country team to qualify for state for the second year in a row. With the absence of a state meet in 2020, I led our team to a second place finish in the Regional Championships with my individual first place finish.

Benefits of Other Sports

Playing travel soccer at a young age also taught me that, with practice, hard work, and dedication, I could truly excel, as I went from being one of the youngest and smallest members of the team to one of the best over five years. Although ultimately I decided to forego soccer to focus on fencing, the lessons that I learned training outside—through freezing cold, driving rain, and oppressive heat—created my work ethic for fencing. I also learned that in order to win, I had to support my teammates.

At a young age, running and participating in triathlons were also beneficial because they sparked a competitive mindset and willingness to push myself. Training for races helped me develop my mental strength along with my speed and endurance for high school fencing tournaments and cross country and track races.
